Volkswagen To Introduce New Crossover Concept At 2015 North American International Autoshow

Volkswagen appears to be preparing to introduce a new crossover concept at the 2015 North American International Auto Show next month. If statements from several sources close to the German automaker are found to be true it would point to what could be an expansion of an upcoming lineup of CUVs from VW. The aim seems to be to give VW a larger share of the growing CUV segment while also reversing souring sales numbers here in the U.S. market.

The currently unnamed model is claimed to be a five-seat variant of the larger seven-seat BlueMotion-based CUV that is due to arrive in the marketplace in 2016, according to several unnamed sources in a statement to Reuters. If confirmed, new concept CUV is expected to follow closely behind the larger CUV, possibly arriving in dealer lots in either 2016 or 2017. The two CUVs could be a key part of the German firm's plan to try to curtail a recent sales skid in the U.S. market which saw an 11 percent slide versus the year before. In addition, many of Volkswagens competitors are scrambling to release new SUV and CUV models to accomodate resurgent demand in a segment once weakened by the sudden increase in world fuel prices during the Great Recession. The recent in gas prices has (according to some analysts) played a key factor in jumpstarting demand; new technology has also helped make corssovers more profitable and desirable for automakers to produce.

When compared to many of its rivals, Volkswagen has a rather limited CUV/SUV lineup with customers being able to choose from only two options: the dated Touareg full-size SUV, and the smaller Tiguan which has had to compete against an onslaught of equally compact rivals includfing the Buick Encore, as well as the Subaru Forester. Some of VW's key rivals offer three or more choices to customers.

Volkswagen for its part has not issued an official statement regarding the authenticity of the reports, or that such a concept would be appearing in Detroit. Stay tuned though because more information regarding this rumor surely will arise in the weeks before the kickoff of the 2015 North American International Auto Show on January 12th.
