Off-road themed 2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country to Debut at LA Auto Show

At one time, a Volvo wagon was the S-Class of Suburbia. It looked expensive, and its bunker-like construction made soccer moms feel invincible. Today, however, soccer moms prefer the invincibility of a big crossovers, and that caused Volvo to stop sending us their uber-cool wagons. But they’ve finally decided to add another wagon to their U.S. lineup, and it can even go soft-roading! So say hello to the all-new 2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country…

Based on the V60 compact wagon, the 2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country is a jacked-up snow bunny that can claw its way through even the worst Aspen winter. Like the Audi Allroad and Subaru Outback, Volvo Cross Country models are designed to blend the traction and ground clearance of a small SUV, with the civility of a luxury wagon. This new V60 Cross Country is a bit smaller than the similarly capable 2015 Volvo XC70 Cross Country, but the design is a whole lot fresher.

To propel it through non-asphalt situations, the 2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country gets a torque-vectoring AWD system, with standard Hill Descent Control. A 2.6-inch suspension gives the V60 Cross Country about eight inches of ground clearance, which is more than enough to negociate snow drifts, dirt roads, parking lot curbs, and other obstacles that the typical buyer might encounter. To protect the underbelly from damage, front and rear skid plates are installed, along with side scuff plates at the edge of the body. The 18- or 19-inch wheels are shod with beefy high-profile tires, which Volvo says “add comfort and off-road aesthetics, reducing road noise and providing added wheel protection whether climbing curbs or negotiating rocky roads.”

See, Curbs.

As a proper luxury “crossover”, the 2015 Volvo V60 Cross Country gets a swanky cabin, lined in black leather with unique brown stitching. A pair of two-tone interior themes will also be available once it goes on sale in the U.S. early next year. The only powertrain seems to be Volvo’s 2.5L turbo 5-cylinder, which makes 25hp, and returns 23 mpg. We don’t know if that’s 23 highway mpg, or combined. But Volvo will release all the specs once it’s officially unveiled later this month at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show.
