The Most Interesting Toyota Camry...Ever!!

The words "wow" and "holy crap", have never been used to describe a Toyota Camry. This silently-snooty transportation device has mastered mediocrity and elevated adequacy to an art form. They sell like hotcakes because everybodyknows that you “can’t go wrong with a Camry”. But Toyota’s CEO recently decreed that forthcoming cars bearing his family name, be injected with some excitement. And this 2015 Toyota Camry has just annihilated our perception of the most boring car on earth.

In an effort to prove that Toyota can ‘still do fun’, the gearheads at Toyota Engagement Marketing had Toyota’s racing department cook up this 850-hp dragster for the 2014 SEMA Show in Las Vegas. “It looks like, uh, a 2015 Toyota Camry” said a puzzled Rutledge Wood (Top Gear USA) as he pulled the show car’s cover back. The crowd was nothing short of underwhelmed...until the body tilted back. Jaws collectively fell to the floor as this stock-looking 2015 Toyota Camry transformed into a ground-shaking drag car. If Toyota was trying to capture people’s attention, they succeeded.

The tube-framed funny car is powered by a front-mid-mounted 5.7L V8 from the Toyota Tundra, with a TRD supercharger bolted to the top (this is actually a dealer-installed option on the Tundra). Unlike the big Toyota pickup, the Toyota Camry dragster uses forged pistons, forged connecting rods, an IPT racing transmission, and a wicked set of headers running into a Magnaflow exhaust. It also runs NOS and has a huge set of Goodyear racing slicks mounted on stock-looking 18-inch rims from the 2015 Toyota Camry XSE. Some speculated this blown Camry dragster can run the quarter mile in the 8s, at 150 mph. But Toyota claims their one-off Honda killer is only capable of 9.8 seconds. Further speculation suggests the car was actually limited to that time capability, to avoid installing a parachute and spoiling the visual effect. This honestly makes sense.

Of course, this amazing car won’t see production. It’ll tour the auto show circuit, showing people that Toyota does in fact have a sense of humor. Toyota also plans to perform exhibition runs (we hope) at NHRA races around the country. Just imagine the blank stares it’ll draw as this stock-looking 2015 Toyota Camry rumbles up to the starting line.

It may only be a PR stunt, but we’re sure glad they built this thing, because it proves that Toyota might still know how to build “exciting” cars.
