Recalled: Toyota Camry & Toyota Avalon

It seems that every car ever made has been recalled this year. Not wanting to be left out of the recall fun, Toyota voluntarily called back several thousand copies of the 2014 Toyota Camry, 2014 Toyota Camry Hybrid, 2014 Toyota Avalon, and 2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid. It seems the steering system can fail if you hit a pothole. At least the airbag won’t kill you…

Although no injuries, accidents or deaths have been reported, Toyota is voluntarily recalling 5,650 Camrys and Avalons made for the 2014 model year. It seems there was an improperly manufactured bolt hole in the lower-left front suspension control arm where it connects to the ball joint. As Toyota explains it: “in the event of a severe impact to the lower ball joint, which could result from varying road surfaces during normal driving, the lower arm could separate from the ball joint.” This would result in a loss of steering control, which could obviously lead to an accident. But, thank the car gods, these cars aren’t fitted with a Takada pipe-bomb airbag (we think).

Toyota will soon begin notifying owners, and their local dealer will replace the affected control arm free of charge. Until then, watch out for those potholes...
