2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat Packs a Wallop

There has been an aggressive television ad campaign airing recently that is drawing attention to the 2015 Dodge Challenger. It presents a pretty cool angle, with the Dodge brothers looking like daring, fun-loving old-school hipsters looking for automotive thrills.

John and Horace Dodge started the company back in 1900, when the automotive industry was in its infancy, but the future was bright. By 1916, only the Ford Motor Company sold more cars than the brothers Dodge.

Tragically, both brothers died relatively young in 1920, and the upper trajectory of the company came to a halt. Their widows inherited the company, and it was eventually sold in 1925 to Dillon, Read & Co., and they flipped it to the Chrysler Corporation about three years later. Dodge has been a division of Chrysler since then.

The Challenger has become an iconic American muscle car, and it has risen repeatedly like the proverbial Phoenix. The name was first used on the short-lived Silver Challenger that was around in 1958 and 1959.

When the Ford Mustang and the Chevy Camaro started to compel competitors to compete within the pony car niche, the Challenger was resurrected in 1969. That generation, which could be described as the classic years for the car, lasted through the 1974 model year.

Sadly in my estimation, in 1978 the name Challenger was slapped onto a Mitsubishi and sold by Dodge as something called a "captive import." That abomination lasted through 1983.

The real deal Challenger came back for the 2008 model year, and it has become entrenched on modern American roadways. For 2015 there are going to be a number of different offerings within the Challenger line, but the most attention-getting model is the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.

This car is the quintessential muscle car pumped up on super-charged steroids that come from some future pharmacy. We are talking about a 6.2 liter Hemi Hellcat V8 under the hood. You want torque? The Hellcat delivers 650 pounds thank you, and the engine is rated at a mind numbing 707 horsepower. As you might imagine, this is the most powerful V8 that Chrysler has ever engineered.

In fact, it is the most powerful muscle car that has ever been built according to the Dodge division's CEO, Tim Kuniskis.

I love the fact that American muscle is back in full force, and like the commercials suggest, this car really would make John and Horace proud.
