Crazy-fast 2015 Audi R8 Competition to Bow at the 2014 LA Auto Show

The Audi R8 has been wowing us for years, and a redesigned version is expected to drop soon. But this generation of Audi’s supercar isn’t dead yet. And the latest special edition R8 is the most powerful car that Audi has ever made. Say hello, then, to the 570-hp 2015 Audi R8 Competition.

The 2015 Audi R8 Competition will be officially unveiled next month at at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Audi hasn’t released a whole lot of details yet, but here’s what we do know:

The mid-mounted 5.2L V10 has been retuned to produce 570hp, which is 20hp more than the top-spec 2015 Audi R8 V10 Plus. It’s also the most powerful production engine that Audi has ever made. This mill was plucked directly from the Audi R8 LMS GT-Class race car, and this crazy powerful racing engine can go 13,000 miles under race conditions before it requires servicing. Most supercars need to be serviced every 1,300 feet.

The 7-speed S tronic will be the only transmission offered. But those lightning fast gear changes allow the 2015 Audi R8 Competition to hit 60 mph in 3.2 seconds (that’s 0.01 ticks quicker than the R8 V10 Plus), and produce a top speed of 199 mph. Audi says this is the fastest R8 they’ve ever made. They also said the Competition model has been lightened, and the aero kit gives it more downforce at speed. All of the exterior carbon fiber bits (wing, side blades, etc.) have a matte finish, likely to shave the extra weight of the high gloss lacquer (5-10lbs). Ceramic brakes and huge 305-section rear tires are also included.

Just 60 copies of the 2015 Audi R8 Competition will be made, and they’re all being shipped to the U.S. The order books will be opened in November, and since this is an Audi Exclusive Line model, buyers can tailor the colors and trim to their taste. Pricing hasn’t been announced, but it’ll probably be considerably more expensive than a used Honda Civic.
