BMW Congratulates Itself With M4 DTM Champion Edition

The DTM Touring Car Series is like German NASCAR. Devoted fans tune in to watch a bunch of wild-haired pretty boys try to become champion as they race Mercedes, Audis, and BMWs around tracks like the Nurburgring and Hockenheim. After a 20-year absence, BMW re-entered the series in 2012, and they’ve already cleaned up with an impressive string of victories. To celebrate their success, BMW created a special edition of the 2015 BMW M4. And it’s as gaudy as you would expect.

The 2015 BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition is the German equivalent of a Dale Earnhardt Edition Chevy Monte Carlo. Except here, the gussied-up special edition is actually worth driving. The 425hp twin-turbo M4 doesn’t get (or need) any performance enhancements. But it does get some functional aero bits, like carbon fiber front flaps, a black-painted front splitter and side skirts, a decklid spoiler, and a carbon fiber diffuser. The side mirror caps are also made from carbon fiber.

To set the 2015 BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition apart from lesser M4s, lots of colorful touches have been applied. The center of the hood is matte black with multi-color stripes flowing down to an orange front grille frame. The trunk lid gets the same treatment, and two matte black stripes adorn the sides of the car, along with a “23” decal on the doors, paying homage to champion driver Marco Wittman’s race car number. There’re also big “DTM Champion 2014” stickers on the rear side windows, and black 19-inch wheels.

On the inside of the 2015 BMW M4 DTM Champion Edition, buyers will get Marco Wittman autographed sill plates, carbon fiber dash trim with more DTM Champion callouts, and a plate with the car’s serial number. Just 23 examples of this colorful self-tribute will be made because... 23 is the number on Marco Wittman’s race car. They’ll be sold only in Germany too, which is good thing. We ‘Muricans like our race tributes to be NASCAR-themed Chevys.
