2014 Toyota Sienna Minivans Safety Recall

Toyota has issued a very small recall on some very new vehicles. Only 263 of the new Sienna minivans have been sold, but dealers have been ordered not to sell any on their lots until they have been repaired.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “The [2014 Toyota Sienna minivans] have a transmission shift control cable whose protective cable sleeve may have been damaged during assembly. This could cause the control cable to bind or separate during gear-shift operation, causing incorrect gear selection.”

In layman's terms, you may not be in the gear you think you are, which may cause your vehicle to move in “an unintended or unexpected direction”. If you are driving, this will increase your chances of an accident. If you think you have put your car in “park” but you actually did not, it could roll away causing injuries to occupants of the vehicle, those entering or exiting the vehicle, as well as pedestrians or other bystanders.

The problem was discovered in June by a member of the post-assembly inspection team. Toyota has stated that it is not aware of any customer complaints from the 263 owners thus far. The recall has already begun and owners will be notified by mail if they own one of the affected minivans. All the covered vehicles were built between June 17th and June 24th of this year. Questions may be directed to Toyota at 1-800-331-4331.
