Baby, You're Hot!

Don’t you love it when someone tells you that you look good or pretty or, best of all, hot? If someone happens to tell you that while you are driving a Grand Cherokee or Durango, you might want to do more than blush and smile. They could be clueing you in on a more serious matter.

Chrysler has issued a recall on 895,000 Jeep Grand Cherokees and Dodge Durangos from the model years 2011 to 2014. There is an problem with the wiring in the vanity mirror lights which carries a fire risk. So far, there have been 41 complaints, 38 fires, and three injuries reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration stemming from improper wiring. In some of them the fire spread to the front seats and door panels, and one reported damage to the sunroof when the fire caused the glass to shatter. Chrysler technicians have been sent instructions to install a spacer with a wire guide to keep the wires routed properly to avoid having them short circuit.

Even though Chrysler is accepting responsibility for this fire hazard, the company is not admitting any fault with the assembly or the lighting when it leaves the plant. All three of the injuries occurred on vehicles which had been serviced previously and Chrysler says the technicians reassembled the vanity mirror or headliner improperly leading to the short circuit problem.

All repairs will be made at no charge to the owner. Questions can be directed to Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.
