Detroit Electric Readies the Launch of 'World's Fastest Electric Vehicle'

Ever since the Tesla Roadster retired a few years back, the world of electric vehicles has been a little less exciting. The Model S is a nice replacement, and there are a number of high-end electric supercar designs floating around, but the market really misses a sporty, semi-attainable electric two-door. It's a void that Detroit Electric will soon fill with the new SP:01, a car it calls the world's fastest production electric vehicle.

Detroit Electric, a revived auto marque originally formed in the early 20th century, revealed the SP:01 in April 2013. It originally planned to launch the car last summer but was forced to delay that launch. It announced this week that it is in the process of finalizing the production version, which it will soon launch in various markets around the world. It is currently finishing dynamic testing in Europe.

The SP:01 has a 282-hp motor powering the rear wheels of a package that weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of 2,400 pounds. That combination allows it to reach 155 mph after hitting 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.

The top speed is well higher than the Tesla Roadster Sport, which topped out at 125 mph after an identical 3.7-second 0-60 mph time, but the claim of "world's fastest" is sure to draw some challenges. Some might question the validity of their "production vehicle" status, but electric supercars like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive (155 mph) and Rimac One (190 mph) are every bit as fast as the SP:01.

The SP:01 is still wearing a non-production prototype body, but if the design is any indication of its final form, it will look a lot like the Tesla Roadster. That's largely because, like the Tesla, the SP:01 is based on a donor Lotus vehicle.

Detroit Electric plans to announce more details about the car's production and sale in the coming weeks. The last we knew, it was planning on building around 1,000 limited edition models, with pricing starting at $135,000. The SP:01 is planned as the first member of a Detroit Electric family of electric cars, additional members of which will start appearing next year.
