GM's Recall Totals Climb Higher

GM has issued four new recalls affecting more than 89,000 vehicles in the US.

57,512 trucks of the following models are covered in the first recall:

– 2014 Chevrolet Silverado LD

– 2014 GMC Sierra LD

– 2015 Silverado HD, Tahoe and Suburban

– 2015 GMC Sierra HD, Yukon and Yukon XL

The base radio may not function which will prevent any warning from being heard by occupants of the vehicle. These warnings include a chime if the key is in the ignition and the driver’s door is open and when the front seatbelts are not buckled. This puts the vehicles in violation of motor vehicle safety standards which cover theft, rollaway and occupant crash protections. There have been no crashes or injuries reported and dealers are able to reprogram the radio module.

31,520 2012 Buick Verano, Chevy Cruze, Sonic and Camaro cars are being recalled for a defect which could cause the shorting bar inside the dual-stage driver’s airbag to make contact with the airbag terminals. In this state, the airbag warning light will come on and the airbag will not deploy in a crash. At least one crash with injuries was caused by this defect. Dealers will replace the steering wheel airbag coil.

61,2013-2014 Chevy Sparks and 2013 Buick Encores, made in Changwon, Korea between December 30th, 2012 and May 8th, 2013, may have an problem with the front passenger airbag end cap separating from the airbag inflator and preventing the airbag from deploying. There have been no crashes or injuries reported.

33,2014 Chevy Corvettes may have an internal short circuit which could disable the front airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, and the Automatic Occupancy Sensing Module. There have been no crashes or injuries reported. Dealers will replace the affected modules.

Letters from GM will be mailed to owners of the affected vehicles and repairs will be made free of charge. GM has also stated that courtesy transportation can be arranged where necessary.
