Honda Launches 2015 Pilot with New Special Edition Trim

Honda launched the 2015 Pilot earlier this month, and the eight-person sports utility vehicle gets a new "Special Edition" trim. While it's not the type of special edition car that we're used to, the fifth Pilot trim option does offer a few added features and enhancements.

Honda calls the 2015 Pilot the "ultimate family adventure vehicle" and stresses that the eight-passenger SUV has "go-anywhere, do-anything capability." It also says that the Pilot's EPA fuel economy of 25 mpg (2WD models) makes it a class leader. Add an extra two drive wheels, and the Pilot is capable of towing up to 4,500 pounds.

All 2015 Pilot models are powered by a 250-hp3.5-liter i-VTEC V6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management. The engine is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission, and all trim levels are available with 2WD or Honda's Variable Torque Management 4-wheel-drive system. The VTM-4 system packs fully automatic 4-wheel-drive capability; it also has a "lock" mode that can deliver the best possible torque transfer to the rear wheels to aid extraction from extremely low traction conditions.Pilot drivers are also assisted by a Grade Logic Control that helps dial in the appropriate gear when ascending or descending steep hills.

Despite the exclusive-sounding name, the Special Edition (SE) trim falls in the middle of the Pilot line-up, between the EX and EX-L trim levels. It packages pewter gray aluminum alloy wheels, SE badging, a one-touch power moonroof with tilt feature, Sirus XM radio, and a Honda DVD Rear Entertainment System. The Pilot SE starts at $33,120 for the 2WD version and$34,720 for the 4WD, both before an $830 destination fee, license, tax, and registration.

The base Pilot LX 2WD starts at $29,870 before the $830 destination charge. Standard features on all 2015 Pilots include a remote entry system, rearview camera, and integrated Class III trailer hitch. The most expensive Pilot trim that Honda lists on its announcement is the $41,620 Pilot Touring 4WD with RES and Navi.
