Juke's Timing Chain has Problems

Nissan is issuing a voluntary recall for all 2011-2013 Juke crossovers due to an issue with the timing chain. The chain can deteriorate or distort over time and can fail due to this defect. The driver may or may not get a warning light to alert him to the problem. If a light does come on, the chain is likely to fail if not repaired.

So far, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received 14 complaints about the timing chain on 2011 models and one on a 2012. None have been reported for 2013. One of the complaints states the vehicle had only 28,000 miles on it.

Last week a 2011 Juke owner reported to the NHTSA that his car simply died in the middle of the road when the timing chain failed completely. It was taken to the repair shop where the chain was replaced, but the car didn't make it off the premises before it stopped running again. The service manager says metal shavings from the defective chain were to blame. Eventually the engine itself had to be replaced due to damage sustained when the chain broke.

There is no word as yet whether there have been any accidents or injuries associated with this problem and Nissan is authorizing dealers to replace the timing chain, chain guides and crank sprockets on all 2011-2013 Jukes at no charge to the owner.

Nissan can be reached at 1-800-647-7261.
