GM Puts the Brakes on 8,208 More Vehicles

General Motors has announced yet another recall, bringing the total to 19 so far this year and five just within the last two weeks. 5.4 million GM vehicles have been involved in recalls of one kind or another this year.

This is a voluntary recall that covers 8,208 2014 Chevy Malibu and Buick Lacrosse sedans. The auto maker noticed that rear brake rotors were installed in the front brake assembly by mistake and stated that “the condition could significantly shorten front brake pad life and reduce brake system performance, increasing the risk of a crash.” This is due to both models depending on stronger braking in the front which requires more substantial brake motors.

There have been 1,700 of these vehicles sold with the balance remaining in dealer inventory. Dealerships received a stop-sale notice to begin on May 1st. The cars will be released for sale after they have all been inspected and repaired if necessary. GM expects that only a small portion will be found to have the wrong front rotors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not issued a formal recall for this issue and there have been no crashes, injuries, or fatalities connected to it. If you have one of the vehicles in question you may take it to your local dealer for inspection and/or repair or call GM at 1-800-222-1020 with any inquiries.
