McLaren Special Ops Blacks Out the New 650S

Fresh off a world debut at the recent Geneva Motor Show, the McLaren 650S has gotten some special treatment from McLaren's customization branch. McLaren Special Operations outfitted the new coupe with a variety of bespoke components to create the MSO 650S Coupe Concept, a sinister supercar.

The MSO concept's ‘Agrigan Black’ metallic black paint immediately makes itself known, giving the car what McLaren rightfully describes as a stealth-like appearance. This looks like the perfect car to test the old urban tale about speeding so fast with the lights out that the police don't even see you.

Like oh so many people, the MSO concept's midnight demeanor changes in the light of day. The paint's deep ruby red metallic flake shifts its appearance when viewed in direct sunlight. Suddenly, the black of the carbon fiber kit contrasts with the paintwork instead of blending in. Carbon upgrades include a front splitter, air intakes, bespoke full-length side blades, and an MSO rear diffuser.

MSO owners will enjoy looking at the upgraded satin black engine covers and daydreaming about the twin-turbo V8 power underneath. McLaren hasn't tuned that engine for the MSO Concept, so it's the plenty aggressive 641hp 3.8-liter unit that comes standard in the 650S. Assuming the aerodynamic improvements on the MSO don't make any discernible impact on performance (McLaren doesn't mention any), the car hits 62 mph in three seconds flat and tops out at 207 mph. A set of the 650S' alloy wheels and Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires do the spinning.

Inside the cockpit, the MSO-spec 650S concept includes fixed-back carbon fiber seats covered with black leather that shed 33 lbs of fat. The switchgear and bezels are finished in gloss black, providing contrast with the extensive use of satin carbon fiber.

McLaren says that the new MSO Concept is a one-off design study. It plans to monitor reactions in considering a potential consumer version. The carbon fiber side blades and rear diffuser are available through MSO for both the 650S and the 12C.
