Audi A3 Named World Car of the Year

The 2014 New York International Auto Show is going on now at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan. That means a whole lot of shiny cars are dazzling the biggest city in the United States. One car in particular has distinguished itself above and beyond the pack. The Audi A3 has taken home the prestigious "World Car of the Year" award, beating out 23 other competitors.

The A3 was awarded at a press conference held last week. The original list of 24 vehicles was worked down to 12 semi-finalists, then three finalists. The A3 beat out the BMW 4 Series and the Mazda 3 to win the title.

"It might borrow styling hints from its bigger brothers, but the A3 still offers classic, chiseled contours and even better interior trim levels," the jury commented. "With a superb choice of engines and 4 body styles, the A3 range packs a hefty premium punch in the small luxury segment. Audi should be complimented for making this A3 ride like no other A3. All the old shimmer over rough surfaces has gone, replaced by a silky smooth ride that approaches limousine quality."

The winners were chosen by a jury of 69 journalists from 22 countries around the world. Each juror reviews vehicles as part of his or her regular work.

The award is the second World Car of the Year overall title for Audi, which also won with the A6 in the inaugural 2005 year. Audi has also won five other awards in the ceremony—three World Performance Car of the Year titles and two World Car Design of the Year titles.

"The Audi A6 was the first ever winner of this award and we are delighted that the Audi A3 has repeated that achievement by being voted 2014 World Car of the Year," said Rupert Stadler, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI AG. "The Audi A3 showcases Audi’s technical competence in all aspects of carmaking, not least in the areas of lightweight technology, drivetrain, mobile infotainment and driver assistance systems. This major award win is an achievement that the whole company can celebrate."

The Audi A3 is in its third generation. The A3 sedan launched in the US earlier this month and starts at $29,900. It comes powered by 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder engine options. Audi has the A3 TDI Sportback on display at the NY Auto Show. It plans to add that model, along with the A3 Cabriolet, A3 TDI sedan and A3 Sportback e-tron, over the next year and a half.
