The 2015 Kia Sedona!!!

For years, the Kia Sedona served as the South Korea's store-brand alternative to pricier kiddie totes from Honda, Toyota, and Dodge. It had all the charm of a plastic trash can, but it was cheap and it got the job done. Now there's an all-new Grayco Brat-Stroller 2015 Kia Sedona and it's poised to claim a sizable chunk of the now dwindling minivan market. So break out the Capri Sun and Goldfish, it's time to go to pick up the kids... Gangnam Style.

The first thing that you'll notice about the 2015 Kia Sedona is that ginoromous adaptation of Peter Schreyer's (the famous Audi designer that now works in Seoul) signature Tiger Shark grille. It's flanked by a pair of appropriately large headlamps, with menacing LED DRLs. The look is aggressive and almost truck-like... which is apparently what they were going for.

The machismo continues with subtly flared wheel arches, and skid plate-like trim on the bottom edge of the front and rear bumpers. The side glass tapers toward the rear with an upside down version of the Honda Odyssey's “lightning bolt” quarter glass detail. And the Kia badge on the tailgate is about the size of Warren, Texas. Since the best selling Dodge Grand Caravan moved only 32k units last year, Kia will have to convince CUV buyers to “respect the van” once again. The aggressive-ish styling of this new Sedona should go a long way toward accomplishing that goal.

On the inside, you'll find what Kia is calling “CUV-like cab-forward design”. There's a wide center console with a floor shifter(!), an elegantly styled dash, and you can specify one- or two-tone color pallets. The second row can be outfitted with heated captains chairs (with flip-up footrests), or a three-across split seat with a new Slide-n-Stow function. If you need extra cargo room, or a third row pass-through, simply pull a lever and the bottom of the seat flops forward, then the rest of the seat sort of stands up behind it. This won't be ideal for everyone, but it does work.

Under the hood of the 2015 Kia Sedona is a 276hp 3.3-liter V6, mated to a 6-speed automatic. That's more powerful than anything in the segment, except for the 283hp Dodge Caravan, of course. The Dodge's second row seats also stow completely out of the way, whereas the Kia's thrones just stand at attention, like the Queen's Guards. Details like that remind you that the 2015 Kia Sedona is not a game-changer. But it's certainly more compelling than it used to be. Plus you can get a dual-pane panoramic roof... just like a CUV. Maybe they should call it a CUVan?
