The Volkswagen Golf is celebrating its 40thbirthday with an updated body style and modern technology. It was originally called the Rabbit, went on sale in Europe in May of 1974 and made its way to the United Statesin December of the same year.

The 2015 GTI model will start at $25,215 which is only a $195 increase over last year. The wheel base is 2.1 inches longer than the outgoing model. Standard features include a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder direct injection turbo engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. Also included is a touchscreen radio, ambient lighting, LED fog lights, and a multifunction steering wheel encased in leather.

For $1100 more a 6-speed DSG dual clutch package is available. Later in the year, a performance package will be offered which includes larger brakes, an electronically controlled limited slip differential, and an additional 10 horsepower; this package will set you back $1495. There could be an optional Dynamic Chassis Control with adaptive damping in the future but no price has been set for it as yet.

The interior has nothing unexpected and sticks to the standard plaid seats and dimpled gear shift knob, both of which give a nod to the Golf’s namesake sport. The Environmental Protection Agency has determined that the new VW model will get 25 mpg in the city and 34 on the highway.

Other model styles will include the TDI, TSI, SE, and a fully loaded Autobahn which will start at $30,415. The 2015 Golf lineup will begin arriving at dealerships in June, and by August showrooms should have the complete line.
