Tesla Cares

Tesla cares about its customers, and not only for their physical safety. With all the negative press surrounding the Model S and its alleged propensity for catching fire, Tesla has gone above and beyond to give buyers of this vehicle peace of mind.

All new Model S sedans will now be fitted with two new pieces of safety equipment to protect the battery, which is mounted under the vehicle. The battery is already shielded by a quarter-inch of aluminum armor plating. A hollow aluminum bar will now be placed in front of the battery housing which will deflect road debris away from the battery and into the plastic aero shield. To further protect the battery and other components under the car Tesla has designed a titanium plate that will effectively “neutralize” road debris, according to CEO Elon Musk.

Tesla stands by its claims that the Model S is one of the safest vehicles on the road and supports this statement by saying that the risk of fire is only 1 in 8000. This number is five times lower than for a gasoline-powered car. Mr. Musk furthers this claim by noting that there have been no deaths or serious permanent injuries during the six years the car has been in production.

The new plating has been designed to function even in situations that would not normally be encountered. Case in point, the highly publicized fire in Mexico: the driver of the sedan was traveling at about 110mph, encountered concrete road debris, smashed through a wall, and crashed into a tree. A wheel was torn off the car during the accident. In spite of the damage and the fire which started a few minutes after the car stopped, the driver was able to safely evacuate the vehicle and was not injured at all. With the upgraded plating in place, Tesla says even this fire could have been prevented.

If you own a Model S sedan and would like to have it retrofitted with the new plating, Tesla is offering to install it free of charge, further showing their commitment to the mental and physical well being of its patrons.
