Volvo Futuristic Retro Concept

Volvo recently unveiled a concept vehicle at the 2014 Geneva Auto that previewed what can be expected from this automaker in the years to come. The Concept Estate uses modern technology mixed with vintage looks to make it a fun drive, yet remain a very capable vehicle.

The Estate is a modern version of a station wagon that takes its rear end and its two-spoke steering wheel from the early 1970s. The front end boasts a classy looking floating grille while the roof is all glass.

The interior has been simplified with futuristic technology. Volvo Vice President of Design Thomas Ingenlath says, “Everything is exactly where you expect it to be, making the drive more enjoyable, efficient and safe.” The buttons and knobs found in most vehicles have been replaced with a large touch-screen tablet that acts as the main control panel and is connected to the digital displays directly in front of the driver. Speaking about the lack of knobs and dials, Volvo Interior Design Direct Robin Page compares it to “being freed from a pair of handcuffs.”

Volvo plans to use this instrument interface first in the XC90, which will be at dealerships in early 2015. This model was once the highest seller for Volvo, but over the last decade sales have dropped significantly. The manufacturer hopes that the upgrade on the inside and maintaining the sleek look on the outside will breathe new life into the station wagon.
