Ram ProMaster Recall

Ram ProMaster Recall

Recalls scare me. I don’t want to think that my automobile may do something unexpected that could cause injury to me or others and do damage to itself. Chrysler’s current recall is one of the scariest in my book.

Chrysler is voluntarily recalling 9,655 2014 Ram ProMaster full-size vans due to an issue with the gas pedal. It appears that if pressure is applied at a certain angle the pedal can stick and cause the vehicle to accelerate uncontrollably. Anything to do with the gas pedal is frightening. Fortunately there have been no reported injuries, accidents, or customer complaints associated with this problem.

It was discovered in the safety of a Chrysler testing facility and the Chrysler Group engineers immediately went to work on the problem. According to a statement from Chrysler, the engineers “investigated and determined a 3.0-inch stop, which went into production four days after the incident, did not bind even when force was applied to the accelerator pedal at an angle.” Chrysler also stated that the “new stop represents a more robust design and improves pedal feel at wide-open throttle.” Apparently they killed two birds with one gas pedal stop.

Again, this is a voluntary recall by Chrysler and there has been no investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recall will begin within 60 days and owners will be notified by mail if they are in possession of an affected vehicle, although about half of the recalled vans are still on dealer lots. 2014 Ram ProMaster owners with questions can contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

Report Receipt Date: FEB 04, 2014
NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V032000
Component(s): VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
Potential Number of Units Affected: 7,935

Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC

SUMMARY:
Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2014 Ram ProMaster vehicles manufactured July 1, 2013, through December 10, 2013. In the affected vehicles, if the accelerator pedal is pushed downward at a certain angle, the pedal may get stuck in the wide open throttle position due to interference with the accelerator pedal stopper.

CONSEQUENCE:
A stuck accelerator pedal can result in uncontrolled acceleration, increasing the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:
Chrysler will notify owners and dealers will replace the accelerator pedal stopper with a larger one, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin in March 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P02. Note: These vehicles are equipped with a brake override system. In the event a pedal is trapped, pushing on the brake pedal will brake the vehicle and enable the driver to slow and stop and turn off the vehicle.

NOTES:
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
