The World's Most Expensive Car: The Bugatti Veyron

For those who have a passion for sports cars, the Bugatti Veyron is not only the fastest car on the road, it will also put most of us working class, living-paycheck-to-paycheck car enthusiasts into a state of remorse. It is also the world’s most expensive car with a price tag of two million dollars. So, what do you get in a car that costs more than any other sports car available?

Nothing about the Veyron Bugatti is typical, including the W-16- two narrow-angle V-8s or the four turbochargers which generate 1001 hp from its 16-cylindar engine, which is formed by connecting two V8 engines at the crank. It takes 10 radiators to cool all of the heat generated from the system. Power is conveyed by means of four-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.

How fast can such a well equipped sports car travel? The Veyron can reach a top speed of a whopping 253 mph and maintain that momentum for only 12 minutes before all of the fuel in the tank is used up. The world’s fastest car can reach 60 mph in a mere 2.5 seconds, 100 mph in 5.5 seconds, and 150 mph in 9.8 seconds, and maximum speed of 252 mph takes only 55 seconds.

With all of that power under the hood, the car was designed with a control mechanism using a special key that is required to "unlock" the Veyron's top speed of 250+ mph. The car is then lowered to just 3.5 inches from the ground as a hydraulic spoiler extends at speed, which also acts as an air brake.

After a long absence from the market Bugatti, and its parent company Volkswagen, has made a comeback and reclaimed its title as the ultimate performance vehicle and the world’s most expensive sports car in production.

On a recent episode that was to be the last night Conan O’Brien would host the Tonight show on NBC, O’Brien apparently created a strategy to get even with his boss by unveiling a new character to the show—a “Bugatti Veyron Mouse” reportedly with a $2 million dollar price tag. The car was decked out to look like a mouse with ears on the roof and whiskers jutting out from the hood. The debut of the world’s most expensive “mouse” was complemented by the Rolling Stones song “Satisfaction.”

The Bugatti-Veyron-16_4-Grand-Sport-11 was recently auctioned off at the 2010 Geneva Auto show for a mere 1.75 million Euros, which translates to 2.12 million in U.S. currency.
