Import Sports Car Offerings Are Going To Rock 2014

Import sports cars are characterized by their styling, handling, and technology integration -- what they lack in cubic inches, they make up for in the driving experience. Historically, the market hasn’t been overrun by these models, but a shift in the attitude of both auto makers and consumers is prompting the development of more import brand sports cars.

New This Year...
For 2014 alone, the sports car is getting a handful of exciting new models. Not including the supercar or exotic premiers, these are the best new import sports cars (in alphabetical order):

Audi R8
With a price tag starting in the low $100,000s, the Audi R8 is almost too expensive to make the list. The R8 is a perfect mix of exotic styling and high performance, a blend that’s becoming more prevalent across the board. This new model is available in a V8, V10, and V10 plus version with the highest output of the three being 550bhp. So, it’s not quite in the 600 horsepower club I talked about in my last post, but it’s not too far off.

BMW 4 Series
I think people are the most excited about the new M4 by BMW. The new series is characterized by a much larger but lighter-than-ever body with striking styling and more technology integration throughout. While there are no hugely exciting powertrain changes, I for one am happy that BMW decided to carry over the same proven engines used in the 3-series. The BMW M4’s price tag puts the model in direct competition with American sports cars, starting in the low $40,000s.

Infiniti Q60
Here’s another affordable sporty import model coming in with a starting price in the low $40,000s -- the Q60 has a muscular powertrain, precise handling, awesome brakes, and high-tech features.

Jaguar F-Type
This new model
is very sporty looking but also still looks very much like a Jaguar. The F-Type has an optional trim equipped with a torquey, supercharged V6 that enables the car to reach 60mph in 4.8 seconds -- and the starting price of just under $70,000 has it aimed right at Porsche for leadership in the class.

Porsche Panamera Hybrid
Speaking of Porsche, they weren’t going to let 2014 come and go without giving their customers something new to talk about. The all new Hybrid version of the Panamera is able to push 416 horsepower with the 95 extra horsepower that the electric motor adds to the powertrain and the fuel economy will likely blow you away (it’s yet to be determined). Otherwise, this hybrid is nearly identical to the non-hybrid Panamera, which is fine with me.

While I’d like to get into how excited I am as a Toyota fan about the FT-1, there’s plenty going on without speculating on future models.
