A Trio of NAIAS 2014 Teasers

For the average Joe and Jane, December is a time for hurried holiday preparations and family. For the auto industry, it's a time for finishing the sales year while looking ahead to the next. Automakers have been teasing new cars and concepts for next month's North American International Auto Show right and left. Instead of trying to keep up with the barrage one by one, we're rounding 'em up a few at a time. Here we have a trio of interesting, sporty Asian cars: a Kia 2+2 concept, a race-inspired Infiniti concept and a new Lexus F performance car.

"Conceived at the automaker’s U.S. design studio in Irvine, CA, this stunning 2+2 sports car is intended to turn heads while delivering superb driving enjoyment on both road and track," Kia says about its concept car.

The teaser photo of the golden Kia provides a bit more skin than teaser photos usually do, but the bird's eye view makes it a little difficult to gauge the shape and design. We know for sure that it has some rippling muscles over all four wheels, and it appears to have a sloping hatchback similar in look to a Nissan 350 Z. The glasshouse wraps around the cabin similar to past Kia concepts like this year's Provo.

Infiniti also has a sporty concept car planned, and it's provided a bit more detail than Kia. The concept car combines elements of F1 racing with aQ50 premium sports sedan base. Called the"Q50 Eau Rouge," the concept car combines "road car technology and a thoroughbred motorsport vision." Specifically, some of the car's aerodynamics and design elements are inspired by the Infiniti Red Bull Racing team. A quick face-to-face line-up reveals a new bumper design as compared to the current Q50 - the big work must be on the flanks and rear.

"Performance is a key pillar of Infiniti's DNA, and this car expresses a deepened design interpretation of that. The Q50, with an abundance of technologies, provides a great basis for an extreme performance version, embodied in the design of Q50 Eau Rouge," said Alfonso Albaisa, Infiniti's Executive Design Director.

Sounds like it might find production as a Q50 performance edition.

Finally, we have a definite performance edition from Infiniti's rival Lexus. "Engineered from scratch, one performance layer at a time, the newest F model promises a bold, gritty, experience synonymous with the famed Lexus F heritage."

Lexus' three-sentence press release mentions the "engineered from scratch" theme over and over again, stressing the idea that this isn't just a body job, but a ground-up performance model.

NAIAS gets underway in Detroit on January 13.
