Subaru Introduces New Legacy Concept

Subaru has gone on quite a concept spree this November. It showed the LEVORG concept and a couple others in Tokyo, and now it introduced the Legacy concept at the LA Auto Show. The Legacy Concept celebrates both past and present, recognizing the model's 25th anniversary while providing a glimpse at a future styling direction.

Subaru describes the Legacy Concept as a more modern take on the sedan, bringing more coupe-like dimensions and a new front fascia with a hexagonal grille derived from the Viziv concept. It also has a sharpened "hawk-eye" headlamp design. The car is smothered in a custom Ocean Silver Metallic paint job and planted on 21-inch wheels rolling beneath flared arches. The front set of arches is the starting point for a powerful character line that slashes back into the trunk.

Other distinctive styling points include the front intakes and dual vertical exhaust tips in the rear bumper, which appear to mirror each other; the sleek mirror housings, which may or may not host rear-view camera screens in place of mirrors; and a subtle decklid spoiler. The hawk-eye taillights and hexagonal trunk are designed to add to the symmetry between the front and rear fascias. The concept does not appear to have door handles, creating a seamless profile that conceals the rear doors from some vantage points. Its definitely the soul of a sporty two-door stretched into a four-door body.

The interior is wrapped in brown leather and includes blue accents. The instrument panel includes a multi-function display "operated similarly to a smart phone or tablet." There's a long floor console stretching from the front to the back, which includes an information display for rear passengers. An Eyesight system with head-up display assists the driver.

Subaru did not specify any powertrain details, simply mentioning the standard Subaru Symmetrical all-wheel drive drivetrain.

While the Legacy Concept may not be an exact preview of the next-generation Legacy, the car is nearing the end of its lifecycle. The fifth-generation version was introduced in 2009, and an overhaul is expected for the 2015 model year.
