Subaru LEVORG Concept Previews New Model

Subaru has released a teaser of the all-new LEVORG concept, which will debut at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show. This concept car is no flashy one-and-done, but a preview of a new production model that the company will launch next year on the Japanese market. Subaru hasn't mentioned whether the car will come to other markets, but from the first look, we're hoping it does.

The LEVORG is a prototype version of a sports tourer that Subaru plans to launch next year. The name might hit the ears like the name of a villain in a science fiction movie, but it's actually a combination of "Legacy," "Revolution" and "Touring." Subaru explains that it will carry on its heritage while blazing new ground in the touring car segment. That sounds like a hybrid to us, but Subaru already says the car features a 1.6-liter Boxer direct-injected turbo (DIT) engine, so a hybrid system seems unlikely. The 1.6-liter unit is a newly developed horizontally opposed Boxer variant.

The name isn't the only thing that's a mish-mosh of other elements. Subaru explains the LEVORG combines a sports car feel with the "best in driveability, safety, environmental friendliness, and practicality of a touring car."

Given that it's Subaru we're talking about, we could have all but guaranteed it would be some kind of crossover before seeing the teaser picture. The car appears shorter and/or higher than traditional Subie wagons like the Outback; the silhouette bears more in common with the Impreza WRX, a look that definitely fits in with the idea of a sporty, but still practical, tourer. It has a sloping roof, muscular fenders, and a flat nose. It even has the WRX-style hood scoop. Outside of that, we'll need Subaru to turn the lights on before we can comment further.

Subaru also promises the car will be equipped with the latest technologies, including the next-gen version of the EyeSight monitoring system.

In addition to the LEVORG, Subaru's Tokyo display will have an updated version of the VISIV concept it revealed in Geneva. Subaru calls it the VISIV EVOLUTION CONCEPT and says it previews "the brand's future direction, both aesthetically and technologically." It uses the same 1.6-liter DTI engine as the LEVORG, only in a plug-in hybrid system with a single front motor, two rear motors, and a high-torque-compatible Lineatronic CVT transmission. The original VISIV had a similar system, but with a 2.0-liter DTI engine. In the original concept, the front motor was designed to both drive and generate power, and the rear motors were strictly for driving. Thenew VISIV will also showcase a look at autopilot technology.
