Toyota Corollas Gets a Facelift

If a car manufacturer wants to sell cars it must produce cars that people want to buy. It seems a simple concept, but there have been more than a few auto makers which ignored this rule and went belly up as a result. Toyota seems determined to learn from these mistakes with the 2014 Corolla.

The new Corolla sports a lower grille, rear spoiler, a more aerodynamic windshield, and LED headlights on the outside combined with new engine and transmission technology on the inside. Toyota realizes that auto buyers are getting younger and hopes to appeal to this demographic with a sportier model. Traditionally Corollas have captured only about 15% to 17% of buyers under 35. Judging from the sales of Elantras and Civics, Toyota recognizes that younger purchasers want a more stylish vehicle than the current Corolla and also want more equipment than the 2013 model offers.

The new Corolla features a buffet of small touches and design upgrades to satisfy the tech savviest consumer while maintaining its well known down-to-earth safety and reliability. The base model comes equipped with a 1.8-liter 132-horsepower 4-cylinder engine and is available with either a 4-speed automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission. Its fuel efficiently rating is 38 highway mpg. The passenger area and trunk compartment are the largest in any current compact sedan. This basic model starts at $16,800.

Expect all the safety features commonly found in a Toyota. It has eight standard airbags, and the Star Safety System which includes vehicle stability and traction control, ABS, electronic brake-force distribution, and brake assist. Also standard is Toyota’s Smart Stop Technology which is a brake override system.

From here there are many options to choose from. The LE Eco model has a special cylinder head called the “Valvematic” which boosts fuel economy. The S model has a sport button which “sharpens throttle response and firms up steering”.

Interior options include a navigation system with a multi-information display, in-glass am/fm antenna, and Bluetooth hands-free voice command controls. You can choose automatic climate control with air conditioning and heated front seats. Power locks, smart key entry, and push button start are available along with a telescopic 3-spoke leather trimmed steering wheel. Even if you choose all the options, the price tops out at $22,570 and that includes the moonroof!
