Lamborghini Veneno Roadster Terrorizes Streets

When you build some of the world's most lusted-after exotic cars, the only one really qualified to surprise you with a birthday present is you. Lamborghini has been treating itself to a 50th birthday year filled with truly outlandish presents that no one else could have possibly thought of. It began with the Veneno at the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, and while it seemed like it may never build something more extreme, a couple months later it did: the tri-pronged Egoista. Before its birthday year is up, it makes it a trio, introducing a roadster version of the Veneno.

The Veneno Roadster is built to deliver the feel and thrill of a full-blown race car while remaining civilized enough (and legal) to drive on streets. The no-roof-included Veneno is powered by a 6.5-liter 12-cylinder engine with an output of 750 hp. That engine works with a fast-shifting ISR transmission with five modes, permanent all-wheel drive, and a racing chassis with pushrod suspension and horizontal spring/damper units.

To ensure that V12-powered chassis grips and shoots with ease, Lamborghini has carefully optimized the Veneno Roadster's aerodynamics.

"The front end works as a large aerodynamic wing," the company explains. "The visual division of the rear fenders from the car body is a reference to the world of racing cars and optimizes the aerodynamic flow. The smooth underbody transitions into a substantial diffuser framing the four sizable exhaust pipes divided by a splitter. Large openings serve to ventilate the engine bay and direct airflow to the rear wing. The design of the adjustable rear wing is the product of motorsport experience and extensive aerodynamic simulation to ensure optimum airflow in the interaction of the rear wing with the rear diffuser."

Even the wheels get in on the functional fun, using a turbine-like carbon fiber ring to deliver cooling air to the carbon-ceramic brakes.

The Veneno Roadster's monocoque and entire exterior are built from Lamborghini's favorite composite—CFRP. That composite construction continues inside, where the monocoque is visible in select areas, and Forged Composite seats envelop driver and passenger. The interior is trimmed with a lightweight woven carbon fiber that Lambo calls "CarbonSkin." The car hits the scales at 3,278 pounds.

All that power and lightweight design result in a car that takes off like a cheetah after prey—it hits 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds, topping out at 221 mph.

Lamborghini will sell just nine Veneno Roadsters, each with a price of €3.3 million ($4.5 million), beginning next year. It's hard to argue with the exclusive "Rosso Veneno" paint, but buyers will be able to select whatever color they desire.
