Honda Launches the 50-MPG Accord Hybrid

The Toyota Prius had better watch out. It may still be a leader in parallel hybrid fuel economy, but its empire is being encroached upon. The all-new Honda Accord Hybrid not only boasts a 50-mpg EPA rating, but it does so in a familiar sedan design.

According to Fortune magazine, the Accord Hybrid is the first sedan to break the 50-mpg city mark. That big 5-0 headlines a fuel economy sticker that reads 45 mpg highway and 47 mpg combined. The new hybrid will provide a "treat" to green car shoppers, hitting US dealerships on October 31.The Accord Hybrid starts at $29,945 after destination and handling charge and ranges up to $35,695 for the Touring trim. The final EX-L trim lies in the middle, starting at $32,695 after destination.

"With advanced technologies standard on every Accord Hybrid we've given customers an incredible combination of fuel efficiency, technology and value," said John Mendel, executive vice president of sales at American Honda. "The addition of the Accord Hybrid to the lineup will further advance Accord's position as America's most popular passenger car with individual buyers."

Unlike the lighter hybrids previously released by Honda, the Accord earns its lofty fuel economy with a broader hybrid powertrain that includes electric-only driving. The two motors and 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine are controlled with three different driving modes.

The Accord Hybrid comes standard with a number of advanced safety and comfort features, includingLaneWatch blind spot display system, rearview camera, LED daytime running lights (DRL), an Expanded View Driver's Mirror, BluetoothHandsFreeLink, USB/iPod integration, Pandora compatibility, a driver's seat with 10-way power adjustment, and a 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system. Higher trim levels add additional features like Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Honda's Satellite-Linked Navigation System.

The Accord Hybrid is essentially the body and chassis of the Accord surrounding a more efficient powertrain, but it also includes a few distinguishing features, such as blue grille accenting and unique wheels.
