Honda Launches 2014 CR-Z Hybrid

The 2014 Honda CR-Z officially hit the market this week. The CR-Z received most of its recent overhauling for the 2013 model year, so the new CR-Z continues in its path, offering a combination of sportiness, agility, and fuel economy that few other cars can match.

In the 2013 model year, the CR-Z was updated with a more powerful battery pack, increased power, and styling revisions, while also boasting a TOP SAFETY PICK rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). There's not a lot to improve upon, and Honda appears content with resting on the 2014 model's 36/39/37 (city/hwy/combined) mpg fuel economy in attracting 2014 buyers. The automaker also says the CR-Z is the only hybrid model on offer with a manual transmission. The standard manual transmission offers a fuel economy rating of 31/38/34 mpg (the previous fuel economy was with available CVT gearbox).

The 2014 CR-Z uses a 15-kW Integrated Motor Assist in boosting the fuel efficiency of the 1.5-liter four cylinder engine with"intelligent" Variable Valve Timing. The two units combine to create a peak output of 130 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque. The driver can manage the output of the two units through selection of three driving modes: Econ, Normal, and Sport. ThePlus Sport System offers on-demand acceleration boosting at the push of a button, assuming the battery is more than 50 percent full and the car is moving at 19+ mph.

The 2014 CR-Z comes in two trim levels. The base model starts at $19,995, before $790 destination charge. It comes with the 160-watt six-speed manual transmission, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, rearview camera, six-speaker AM/FM/CD/USB audio system, cruise control, and remote entry.

The CR-Z EX starts at $21,840, before destination fee, and includes upgraded features like a360-Watt, seven-speaker AM/FM/CD Premium Audio System, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with 6.5-inch screen and rearview camera display. Both the EX and the standard model roll on 16-inch aluminum wheels with195/55R-16 tires; 17-inch alloy wheels with205/45R-17 tires are available as an option.
