The Modern Gypsy

Oh, to be a gypsy and wander at will, never knowing where you’ll be tomorrow! My husband and I have had a plan for years now to retire to a motor home and see the country in our old age. We’ve planned to purchase our motor home a year before we retire so I can pack and repack at my leisure. Anything that’s not in the motor home has to be discarded, so I want time to decide what I’m keeping and what must be sacrificed. But when that’s done, oh, the freedom!

With today’s technology this is not such an outlandish idea. What with cell phones and laptops, staying in touch is easy and, unfortunately, even bills find you with ease wherever you happen to be. And with onboard GPS you’ll always know where that is.

The comforts of a traditional home are now available to those with wanderlust. Most recent RVs come with a flat screen TV standard and most have a built-in DVD player also. With front seats that spin around, including the driver’s seat, the living room area is comfortable even if you have visitors. Get everyone in a happy state of mind with the built-in mini-bar complete with wine rack. And if the party goes on too long, the sofa converts into a bed with the newer ones being motorized so, no matter how much you’ve imbibed, providing extra sleeping space is a breeze.

Modern designers have provided ample counter space in the kitchen for preparing meals and a microwave/convection oven takes the place of larger gas or electric ranges. Don’t want to wash dishes? No problem. You can even get a dishwasher and, if you want to be really lazy, a trash compactor.

Before you get back on the road you might want to wash those clothes that got left on the floor at the end of your rambunctious evening. That’s easy with a combination washer/dryer that doesn’t even have to be loaded twice. Just put in the laundry and it's washed and dried without any further attention.

Bathrooms are now fully functional with everything from bathtubs to bidets, and the showers are no longer cramped square boxes with no elbow room.

Of course the space is smaller when the vehicle is on the road, but when you’ve arrived at one of your many destinations the sides of the motor home pop out, sometimes doubling your floor space, depending on the model. Add to this better windows, which make the space seem even larger, and skylights to really open things up and a home away from home is more than ever just a home.
