Infiniti's Q30 Concept Combines Hatchback, Coupe and Crossover

Joining the barrage of other Frankfurt-bound concept cars from the likes of Lexus, Suzuki, and Opel, the Q30 concept represents "the next step in Infiniti's foray into new premium segments." The car combines elements from a hatchback, crossover utility vehicle and sports coupe, previewing a new type of styling for Nissan's luxury branch.

Infiniti describes the Q30 as a vision of a compact car aimed at a new generation of premium customer. We take that to mean an entry level car with flashy, sporty styling and a price tag that is attractive enough to lure young professionals to the dealership. The Q30 appears aimed at the very type of consumer that Mercedes recently began wooing with the CLA-Class and to-be-debuted-at-Frankfurt GLA-Class.

We won't know a whole lot about what type of mechanicals and performance Infiniti envisions for the Q30 until Frankfurt, so we're left to analyze the car's styling. Automakers love to talk about design language that conveys motion, even while the vehicle is parked in the driveway. Often, they're just speaking out the other end or seeing something we don't, but the Q30's undulating curves and sculpts do indeed hint at a certain type of natural motion—like a wind blowing across a light, supple material or a ripple traveling across a body of water. Interestingly, Infiniti doesn't even mention the idea of 'motion while standing still', even though the Q30 is one of the best examples we've seen lately.

What Infiniti does say: "The shape of the Infiniti Q30 Concept deliberately challenges categorization—not a coupe, not a hatch, and not a crossover but a fusion of the three body styles. It is designed for younger customers seeking an alternative to traditional premium compact vehicles and open to convention-challenging approaches."

More specifically, Infiniti says the car has the dynamism of a coupe, the interior space of a hatchback, and the high stance of a crossover. The coupe similarities are best exemplified by the sharply sloping roof and sporty front end, while the high stance comes courtesy of a rather large, imposing set of wheels.

The Q30 will debut on September 10, the first media day of this year's Frankfurt Show. We'll have a closer look at its styling and engineering then.
