Ram Unveils Rumble Bee Concept Truck

In the late 60s and early 70s, the upwardly-mobile baby boomers were just hitting their stride. American automakers were clamoring for their business as performance cars flowed from Detroit like honey from a hive. They tried all sorts of 'hip' new ways to lure 20-somethings into the showrooms, and Chrysler Corp decided to take a rather cartoon-y approach with cars like the Warner Brothers-Approved Plymouth Road Runner, the Tasmanian Devil's Plymouth Duster, and the angry Dodge Super Bee. They tried to recreate some of the muscle-bound madness in 2004-2005 with the Dodge Ram Rumble Bee trim pack. No performance mods were made to the truck, but it was every bit as cartoon-y as the original Super Bee. And to mark the 10-year anniversary of that Rumble Bee, Dodge—excuse me—Ram, has just unveiled an all-new Rumble Bee, and it looks even angrier than the first swarm of Rumble Bees.

Unveiled at the recent Woodward Dream Cruise in Michigan, the Ram 1500 Rumble Bee Concept is based on the 2013 Ram 1500 R/T. Chrysler hasn't officially stated that it'll go into production. But Captain Obvious told us that Chrysler is just trying to create some pre-launch buzz (we couldn't resist) for their new special edition.

The new Rumble Bee is powered by the 5.7L Hemi V8 (395-hp / 407 lb-ft), and actually comes with a few performance modifications this time around. Below the 8-speed auto's dash-mounted dial—inlaid with what looks like a real dead bee suspended above an actual honeycomb—are two buttons to control the bypass valve on the cat-back exhaust system. Ram says that this allows “the full sound force of a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 to escape—loud and LOUDER”.

Under the gloss black/yellow honeycomb engine cover is a Mopar cold air intake, and out back the Ram 1500 Rumble Bee gets a set of 4.10 gears. Without mentioning specific numbers, Chrysler says that the mod “gives the HEMI a bump in performance and relentless torque.” Captain Obvious guesstimates that the new Rumble Bee has 20-30% more power and torque than the standard Hemi. Which will make lighting-up the show truck's black 24-inch Vellano wheels a piece of cake (the suspension has also been lowered by two inches).

Aesthetically, the Ram 1500 Rumble Bee has a raft of sinister touches like a matte-finish Drone Yellow paint job, a Mopar bodykit, black-out headlights/fog lights, gloss black grille/hood scoop inserts, and tail pipe finishers. A gloss black stripe also runs down the sides of the truck, curving up at the rear to meet the famous Speed Bee logo. This truck looks fantastic, and is nearly as in-your-face as the original Super Bee.

From the press release: “The colors and graphics spread through the Ram R/T-based interior, featuring black and Drone Yellow leather sport mesh seats with two-tone yellow/light-grey stitching. “Rumble Bee” lettering and Ram logos adorn chairs, floor mats, and door bolsters. The interior center-piece is an actual amber-encased bee mounted into the 8-speed rotary shifter knob that lights up to expose a honeycomb pattern background. Two buttons below the knob control exhaust cutouts to bypass the Mopar cat-back dual-exhaust system, allowing the full sound force of a 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 to escape—loud and LOUDER! The unique honeycomb pattern is shared with door trim and the dash, where a milled aluminum “10th Anniversary” commemorative badge serves as the truck’s ID.”

We assume the truck will be available in limited numbers for the 2014 model year. Wonder how many bees they'll have to kill to make that shift knob?
