The Top Luxury Brands That Thieves Can't Resist

A recent study by the Highway Loss Data Institute showed that the Ford F-250 was the truck most often targeted by thieves; the same study showed that the Dodge Charger is the most commonly stolen car. There are some crooks out there who have more expensive taste though. The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) has recently published their own list of the top ten luxury automobiles that are targeted in thefts.

The NICB gathered their data by reviewing information on stolen automobiles over four years—2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. What the NICB discovered is that during that period, 4,384 luxury autos were stolen.

The NICB separated the cars into three different categories: compact luxury car, mid-sized luxury car, and premium luxury car. A total of 2,150 compact sized luxury vehicles were stolen; 1,734 mid-sized luxury vehicles were illegally taken; premium luxury cars came in at the lowest rate of only 500 thefts in the four years.

The compact cars are likely being taken at a higher rate because there are more of them on the road—also, the security equipment is probably not as high tech. A higher theft rate might even be a result of more lax behavior on the part of the owner. Alternatively, the high-end models may be more secure because of the habits of the owner. Let’s face it, if you pay top dollar for a car, you are probably going lock it up at night and keep a closer eye on it.

As far as recovery goes for stolen luxury cars, owners of these vehicles can be a little more hopeful. Luxury vehicles were recovered at a rate of 83.7%; that’s really good considering some models in other classes have a recovery rate of 18%.

The list from the National Insurance Crime Bureau of top ten most stolen goes as follows:

1. Compact Model - Mercedes-Benz C-Class (485)

2. Compact Model - BMW 3-Series (471)

3. Compact Model - Infiniti G-Series (405)

4. Mid-Size Model - Mercedes-Benz E-Class (381)

5. Mid-Size Model - Cadillac CTS (326)

6. Mid-Size Model - BMW 5-Series (256)

7. Mid-Size Model - Lincoln MKZ (226)

8. Compact Model - Acura TSX (190)

9. Compact Model - Lexus IS (177)

10. Premium Model - Mercedes-Benz S-Class (163)
