2014 Corvette Z51 Floors It to 60 mph in 3.8 Seconds

Chevy unveiled the all-new Corvette Stingray at the North American International Auto Show in January but waited until this month to give us a firmer performance spec sheet for the most well-equipped Stingray. Not only is the new Stingray the most powerful standard Corvette ever, it's also the most capable.

In January, Chevy estimated that the 450-hp 2014 Corvette would shoot to 60 mph in under 4 seconds. Any red-blooded car fan was prone to ask: Well, how far "under?"

Since that introduction, the Corvette's output has been officially rated at 460 hp, up from the estimated 450 hp. Now its performance has received its own bump. The 2014 Corvette Stingray equipped with the $2,800 Z51 Performance Package accelerates to 60 mph from 0 in 3.8 seconds. That same car can brake back to 0 (from 60 mph) in 107 feet and sustains 1.03 g of cornering force. It completes the 1/4-mile in 12 seconds (at 119 mph).

In addition to an aerodynamics kit, the Z51 Performance Package includes an electronic limited-slip differential; dry-sump oiling system; and integral brake, differential and transmission cooling. After adding the available $1,795 Magnetic Ride Control, and making a few safety alterations, including racing seats with harness, Chevy lapped the Virginia International Raceway's 4.2-mile Grand Course in 2:51.78.

"The new Stingray constantly communicates feedback to the driver, which makes you feel incredibly confident behind the wheel,” Jim Mero, Corvette vehicle dynamics engineer, said of its drive. "That confidence encourages you to attack each corner because the Stingray drives so well: the tire grip is incredible; the steering response is some of the best I’ve ever experienced; the Magnetic Ride dampers allow little body roll through the corner, while still soaking up the rumble strips when you clip the apex. It’s just addictive on the track."

The all-new 2014 Stingray is the first model of the seventh-generation Corvette. It has been completely redesigned inside and out, including an all-aluminum block 6.2-liter LT1 V8 engine, new aluminum frame, stretched wheelbase and widened tracks when compared to the sixth-generation Corvette, and dramatically restyled composite body. It will start wheeling into dealerships during the third quarter of this year, starting at $51,995.
