Fiat Introduces 500 MPV

Few things sound less necessary than a Fiat 500 minivan, but that's exactly what Fiat has introduced in the 500L Living. What was once a simple minicar has become a larger sedan, a crossover, and now a people mover with enough room for a family of seven.

Building upon the 500L, the 500L Living, which will be called the 500L MPW (Multi Purpose Wagon) in the U.K. market, offers a third row of seating for up to seven people. Fiat says the car—which measures 435 cm long, 178 cm wide, and 167 cm high—is the most compact "5 + 2-seater" in the segment, comparing it to the size of a mid-sized car. Because of that, we can't imagine those rear seats being comfortable for anyone whose legs extend past the top corner.

Fiat says the 500L Living combines the agility of a city car, comfort and contents of a C-segment station wagon or saloon, and the space and versatility of an MPV. It offers 638 liters of load capacity.

Upon launch, the Living will come with a suite of four gas and diesel engine options: 95-hp 1.4-liter and 105-hp .9-liter TwinAir Turbo gas options, and 105-hp 1.6-liter MultiJet II and 85-hp 1.3-liter Multijet II turbodiesel options.

The Living will be available in two trim levels (Pop Star and Lounge), both with available five- and seven-seat configurations. Fiat will offer 19 exterior colors, six interior trims, and15 different types of alloy wheels and hub caps, for up to 282 availalable configurations overall.

The 500L Living's official debut will occur next month, which also marks the sixth anniversary of the 500 line. The car will go on sale in Italy in July, with sales in the rest of Europe to follow. Fiat has not yet mentioned whether it plans to bring the 500L Living to the US market.

The Living is the latest member of the growing 500 line-up, which also includes the standard 500L and 500X CUV.
