Nearly 80 Percent of Ford Customers Opting For Sync and MyFord Touch

Automakers have spent a lot of time and money designing and advertising advanced infotainment systems that bring technologies like voice-activated controls and Internet radio into cars. For at least one of those manufacturers, things are paying off in a big way. Nearly 80 percent of buyers of 2013 Ford vehicles have opted for MyFord Touch and Sync systems in their purchases.

According to Ford, the 79 percent of new vehicles equipped with either SYNC voice-controlled connectivity or MyFord Touch touchscreen technologies is up from 68 percent last year. Ford also says that it reflects nearly double the rate of Honda and Toyota vehicles being sold with their respective infotainment systems. MyFord Touch has experienced a particularly spectacular increase, up from 12 percent in 2012 to 55 percent this year.

Since launching SYNC in 2007, Ford has taken a role as an industry leader in infotainment technology, which is paying off for the brand. Not only are a majority of its customers opting for infotainment systems, but the systems are actually a factor in vehicle selection. According to Ford's numbers,53 percent of 2013 Ford Escape buyers were persuaded in large part by its touchscreen technology.

"Ford has launched 60 new technologies the past few years and they are helping attract many new customers in important markets such as the coasts," says Raj Nair, group vice president, global product development. "SYNC and MyFord Touch are key parts of our innovation strategy, and not only bring more new customers to our brand, but help deliver higher satisfaction with overall vehicle quality."

Despite some hiccups along the way, Ford's infotainment systems have led to better vehicle satisfaction. The company says that MyFord Touch-equipped vehicles enjoy higher satisfaction ratings than Ford vehicles without the system, including an 86 percent quality satisfaction rating for the MyFord Touch-equipped F-150 truck, the highest rating in the line-up. Customers are also happy with Ford's tech support, with 91 percent of those who have sought dealership assistance with SYNC or MyFord Touch reporting satisfaction.

Ford has a SYNC and MyFord Touch update planned for this summer.
