Ten Best SUVs Under $25K

"Far more flexible than a sedan but more affordable, maneuverable, and fuel-efficient than a larger SUV, today's compact SUV is a masterful mix of practicality," describes Kelley Blue Book on its website KBB.com. Indeed, the small SUV, commonly known as the crossover or CUV, has been a popular and growing segment of the auto market. With an increasing number of options to choose from, it can be difficult to find the right one. KBB has identified the 10 choices that it believes are better than the rest.

Kelley Blue Book released its "10 Best SUVs Under $25,000" last month, giving readers a guide of some of the top affordable small SUV options. Eight of the 10 models are first-year or completely redesigned new models, giving buyers an incentive to consider some of the freshest hardware on the market. The top picks follow.

2013 Buick Encore- KBB raves about the Encore's fuel efficiency in both front- and all-wheel drive and also lauds it for being "comfortable, maneuverable, well-finished" and reasonably priced. The compact Encore starts at $24,200 (before destination charge) and uses a 138-hp 1.4-liter Ecotec turbo engine for an EPA-estimated 28 mpg combined.

2013 Volkswagen Tiguan- Thanks to a starting price around $24,000, KBB puts forth the argument that the Tiguan could be considered the "most affordable premium SUV on the market." As that descriptor implies, the organization is impressed with the Tiguan's level of driving refinement and interior luxury.

2013 Jeep Wrangler- Quite a departure from the semi-premium Tiguan, KBB's next selection is the venerable off-road warrior known as the Wrangler. It puts "the quintessential off-roader" on the list due to its unique burly design and off-road heritage. The Wrangler comes in numerous packages, equipping it for everyone from off-road wannabes to Moab and Rubicon regulars. It starts at $22,295 before destination and other fees.

2014 Subaru Forester- The new Forester, which was introduced at the LA Auto Show, makes KBB's list because of its "roomier and more refined inside" and "standard and sophisticated all-wheel drive system now better balanced by improved fuel economy." The 2014 Forester starts at $21,995 before fees and boasts 27 mpg combined when equipped with the base-level 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer and 25 mpg combined with the 2.0-liter turbo engine.

2013 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport- Not the first award for the Santa Fe Sport, KBB's designation comes from the SUV's comfortable roomy interior and features. KBB calls it "more elegant than any Hyundai SUV before it."

2014 Kia Sorento- KBB praises the Sorento for its ability to transport seven while maintaining a manageable and svelte exterior package. It also mentions the fuel efficient engine, styling, and long warranty as selling points.

2013 Toyota RAV4- KBB believes the original crossover still belongs on the list of top choices due to its redesigned styling and new features and technologies. The 2013 RAV4 starts at $23,300 before fees and gets 26 mpg combined in base 2WD trim. The base model includes Display Audio with integrated backup camera.

The 2014 Ford Escape, 2014 Mazda CX-5, and 2013 Honda CR-V round out KBB's list. Find out more information about what pushed each model onto the list via the source link below.
