2014 Chevy Spark EV Priced at $27,495

Electric vehicles still aren't competitive with ICE vehicles price-wise, but they're getting closer every year. Chevy priced its Spark EV subcompact this week, showing a price that drops below the $20,000 mark for those eligible for the full $7,500 federal tax credit.

The Spark EV starts at $27,495, which includes an $810 destination charge. When you take the full $7,500 federal EV tax credit into consideration, the price drops just below the $20K threshold at $19,995. Residents of California have an opportunity to take that price even lower with up to $2,500 of state and local credits, for a price as low as $17,495. Although it takes some government money to get there, that's starting to look like the price you'd expect to pay for a small gas car. It's still not quite there, though—the gas Spark starts at just over $12,995 after destination charge.

In addition to the purchase price, Chevy announced that the Spark EV will be available for lease as low as $199 a month with 36-month lease and $999 down at signing.

"The Chevrolet Spark EV is the most efficient—and now one of the most affordable—EVs you can buy," said Chris Perry, vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. "Combined with outstanding infotainment and great design, the fun-to-drive Spark EV is engineered to impress."

The base-level Spark EV is the 1LT model. It can travel up to 82 miles with a full battery and gets an EPA-estimated 119 mpg-e fuel economy. Chevy says that the car will be the first to market with the recently approved SAE combo charger, which enables DC fast charging that can bring the 21 kWh lithium-ion battery to 80 percent full within about 20 minutes. Charging time from a 240-volt source is about seven hours.

Like other electric vehicles, the Spark EV includes a technology suite to the owner apprised of the electric powertrain's status and connect him or her to the outside world. A seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Chevy MyLink will be available on the EV. It integrates with third-party smartphone apps including Siri Eyes Free, which provides voice command operations, Pandora, and Bringo. The RemoteLink smartphone app, available with an OnStar subscription, delivers key information about and control of battery charging, mileage and odometer readings, remote-start, and other features.

The Spark EV will hit select dealerships in Oregon and California beginning next month.
