Toyota Prius Gets A New Image

When you think of the Toyota Prius Hybrid many people get an image of liberal Birkenstock wearing bleeding hearts. In a scene from the movie “Network,” Howard Beale yelled into the microphone, “Give me a break! I’ve got news for all the latte-drinking, Prius-driving, Birkenstock-wearing, trust fund babies.” which demonstrates mainstream thinking regarding the iconic green car.

When the first generation Prius was launched worldwide in 2001, most car critics and industry gurus believed it would be a total flop, but it wasn’t a flop, in fact, Prius is now in its 3rd generation and has sold over 1.6 million automobiles world-wide. So there must be a bigger appeal to this car than just to the eco-population drivers that Prius has been associated with.

The truth is that people from all walks of life (who want to save on fuel expense) actually own a Pruius, and in May of 2009, a new U-tube video portrays, through a comedian rap group, that Prius is not such a nerdy car after all! The comic writers and producers at The Casual Mafia, an LA based entertainment production company, have produced a video that portrays the Prius as being nothing but cool. The video is titled “In My Prius,” by the Casual Mafia, and you can view the video at www.thecasualmafia.com

According to hybridcars.com, when Steve Lutsk (an actor in the company) was interviewed he commented that “Hip-Hop music is flooded with lyrics about Escalades, Hummers, and Benzes. We thought it would be funny to have a song about a car that many would consider to be the polar opposite, the Toyota Prius.” He added that three of the Casual Mafia members actually drive Priuses in real life.

The Prius rap video has a twist of humor, and implies that hybrids can be sexy and cool. The rappers in the video make reference to the Prius’s silent electric drive with the lyrics “I pull up behind and you don’t hear a sound;” they also rap about high “MPGs”, tax credits, carpool lanes, some of the features of the Prius such as the navigational screen, free parking perks they get from owning a hybrid, and, of course, saving money at the gas pumps. “Gas is approaching three bucks a gallon again,” said Lutsk. “We need our MPGs.”

The Prius rap video carries a message that you are never too cool to save the environment, according to Lutsk; “I just hope it’s not too little too late. I don't want what happened in the movie ‘The Day After Tomorrow’ to happen in real life and have to save people from tidal waves and hide in flooded skyscrapers.”
