Witness a World Record With New Bugatti Video

Prior to introducing its latest special edition, Bugatti put the "world record" into the World Record Car Edition by blazing into the books with a 254-mph run recorded by TÜV, the independent German organization for Technical Inspection and Certification. The record was for the fastest convertible in the world, and Bugatti got it done in the Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse. This week, Bugatti released the video evidence of the world record run. Reading about the world record was interesting, but watching it unfold before your eyes is much better.

"This was a very exciting moment. In our training sessions we exceeded 400 km/h but the fact that I could surpass this unbelievable speed once again and even higher has made me very proud," driver Anthony Liu said of the feat. "The car is even at such high speeds incredibly comfortable and stable. With an open top, you can really experience the sound of the engine and yet even at higher speeds I did not get compromised by the wind at all."

Liu, a Chinese entrepreneur and driving enthusiast, received training from Pierre Henri Raphanel, who set the 267.8 mph record for fastest production car in the Veyron Super Sport.

The video pulls you slowly toward Volkswagen's Ehra-Lessien test track and inside Liu's cockpit, mixing in images of the Grand Sport Vitesse being prepped for its day of glory. For some reason, the producers decided to drown out the sexy grumble of the quad-turbo W16 in favor of a cheesy, could-be-from-any-dramatic-film score, but the visuals are compelling enough to make it well worth the two minutes of your time.

“When we introduced the Vitesse, we established the top speed for open-top driving to be 375 km/h. Still, we could not let go of the idea of reaching the 400 km/h mark with this car as well. The fact that we have succeeded in reaching 408.84 km/h is a thrill for me, and it reaffirms once again that Bugatti is the leader when it comes to technology in the international automotive industry”, said Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., shortly after the record was inked.

The Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse launched last year, upping the output of Bugatti's convertible to 1,183 hp. The World Record Car Edition showcased in Shanghai featured cosmetic updates highlighted by the Arancia orange and black carbon fiber on both the exterior and interior. Only eight models will be available and all have been scooped up.
