Dig It: 2014 Buick LaCrosse

Buick’s new corporate image is all about Good Vibes. They’re trying to shed their image of freaky reliability, and bogus build quality. ‘The Sensible Man’s Cadillac’ is what they want people to see. And their new crop of properly luxurious rides definitely fits the groovy new image.

Designed for people who are barely old enough to qualify for a senior discount, the 2014 Buick LaCrosse offers all the luxury of a (modern) Cadillac, without all the pretension. The mid-cycle refresh brings a host of changes, including a more prominent waterfall grille with active grille shutters (to improve gas mileage), massive Xenon headlamps which are framed by expensive looking LED running lights, the traditional Buick portholes are now on the side edge of the hood, and the rear fascia gets a pair of mesmerizing LED tail lamps, along with a prominent pair of exhaust outlets, framed in chrome. A stylish new set of 20-inch wheels also joins the options list, along with a Touring package, which pairs an active suspension (computers automatically adjust the shocks to improve the ride / handling) with the big wheels, to improve the driving experience when the car is in ‘Sport Mode’.

On the inside, the basic design has been retained, but nearly all of the details are new and improved. The ice-blue-lit gauge cluster has been replaced with an 8-inch configurable electronic display, the ADD Button Fest on the center stack has been reduced from 17 buttons to just 9, and a new 8-inch display with Buick’s IntelliLink distraction system has been added. The seats are also new, and you can get them wrapped in a selection of fancy designer leather. Real ash wood trim can also be specified, and there’s a host of new crash avoidance systems that’ll do everything from vibrate your touchie, to autonomously brake the car...should you get lost in the IntelliLink system.

Riding on the same FWD platform as the 2014 Chevy Impala, and Cadillac XTS, the 2014 Buick LaCrosse has a plush ride, and derives its power from either a 304-hp 3.6L V6, or the 184-hp eAssist mild hybrid 4-cyl. The 2014 Buick LaCrosse isn’t a barnstormer, but with the optional V6, it’s certainly no slouch. A Haldex AWD system with an electronic limited-slip differential is also available for snowbelt customers.

So there you have it, a Buick that you can actually drive without being embarrassed. Wonder if GM offers a senior discount?
