How Far Will YOU Go To Impress A Date On Valentine's Day?

How Far Will YOU Go To Impress A Date On Valentine's Day?

When your birthday falls on a gift-giving holiday it’s a double-edged bummer. Not only do you have to buy other people—or a special someone—presents, but they feel obligated to partially (or mostly) ignore the holiday in favor of just celebrating a “generic” birthday.

[Not that I could stomach another stamped sugar “conversation heart” (thirty-plus years of them is more than enough).]

But if there’s one positive thing about a V-Day B-Day it’s this: I’m not held to the same surprise-jewelry-, roses- and chocolate-giving standard as most males. That’s not to say I never had to do anything grand and romantic to win over my lady fair—though after fourteen years of marriage it’s hard to remember what-all I DID do—but I can honestly say I never lied, cheated, stole or “borrowed.”

Then again, I’m not British.

I cannot imagine how the dating market in places like Swansea, Aberystwyth and Leeds would be so desperate as to lead a third of males in those towns to resort to “hiring” (renting) or borrowing clothes, cars, pets and even homes in order to impress their dates, but a Hertz survey of a thousand blokes shows that 31 percent of the men surveyed admitted to doing it (with those places being the top three wherein men are most likely to lie about their ownership of those things in order to make a more favorable impression).

And while I can see why a man driving a Lamborghini—or a Jaguar, Bentley, Rolls-Royce or Ferrari—would indeed set himself apart from the average (Union) Jack, I cannot think of a worse way to start off a relationship than to spend a great deal on an exotic car for one date then have to either keep spending it until the wedding (or bankruptcy) to keep your lie alive.

[OK, a violent criminal record is worse, but this is a car website, not a police blotter.]

Still, as Hertz reports:

“Their efforts might be worth it however, as more than 40 percent of women agree that the car a person drives can make them more attractive, while nearly 60 percent agreed that a man's outfit would impress them.”

[And ladies, you’re guilty of it too. Apparently one in five “confess that they had invested to impress”, especially those between 18 and 25 (40 percent).]

Naturally Hertz didn’t do this for the public good. Instead, they seek to aid and abet your romantic crimes:

“Lamborghinis topped the list of cars that people would most love to be driven in this Valentine's Day. The Hertz Supercar Collection (www.hertzsupercars.com) comes to the rescue for Valentine sweethearts everywhere with the Lamborghini LP570-4 Performante Edizione Tecnica for hire by the day. Other desired supercars on offer include the Jaguar XKR-S, Range Rover Vogue Autobiography and Mercedes SLS AMG Roadster.”

Here in the states, however, when it comes to building your romantic house of lies you’ll have to make do with the hardtop version of that last one, "just" the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Coupe and Ferrari F430 Spyder, and/or coupe and assorted open- and closed-roof Porsches, Benzes, fancy SUVs, Corvettes, Vipers and muscle cars.

Then again, maybe American lads and lasses would respond better to seeing you in one of Hertz’ “green” offerings, like the Nissan Leaf, Toyota Prius, VW Jetta Diesel and Honda CNG Civic, instead.

Regardless, a lie is a lie. So instead of passing off the rental as your own, I suggest you be honest and tell your date that you wanted to impress them with whatever exotic car you arrive in, passing it off as you would a dozen long-stem roses or a massive heart-shaped box filled with chocolates.

After all, with anything Valentine’s Day-related, it’s not the thought that counts, it’s the impression. At least I think it is. Hey, it’s been years since I’ve done it, and a V-Day B-Day Boy probably isn’t the best person to advise you about this. Folks these days still send cards, don’t they?…
