Chevy Is Rushing To Redesign The Malibu

The 2012 Chevy Malibu performed well in the J.D. Power and Associates Initial Quality Study earlier this year, but reviews haven't been so favorable for the redesigned 2013 Malibu. Despite having just given the model a full refresh, Chevy is already talking about a redesign.

GM CEO Dan Akerson toldAuto Newsthat the automaker will give the Malibu a "midcycle enhancement" in response to poor reviews. Sales of the new Malibu have been sluggish, and some GM dealers aren't sure that the sedan will ever be able to compete in the mid-size market.

The refresh will include a redesigned face, but GM hasn't released any other details. It will attempt to launch the updated model by the end of next year, so we anticipate seeing it at one of the major U.S. 2013 auto shows.

Auto Newsreports that Malibu sales slipped by 3 percent in September and October, when the majority of those sales switched over from discounted 2012 models to 2013 models.

I actually think the 2013 Malibu is an attractive sedan in terms of looks and a solid improvement over the 2012 model. If anything, it seems like the dubious hybrid system in Eco trim, which doesn't deliver all that impressive of fuel economy benefits, is the primary force hindering the model's appeal. I would think that would be where GM would be focusing its attention.
