Throughout The Car Industry
No Encore For The Acura ZDX
George Carlin once said, "Too many choices America, it's not healthy." And while it may not be appropriate to explain Carlin's preamble to that statement on a public forum, one thing we can extrapolate from the famous comedian is that those words may not be truer than in the automotive realm.
Hopefully the folks over at Acura have a sense of humor because if not, they may not be taking the exit of the ZDX after just three models years very well. Yup, that's right. The car-no-wait-truck-no-wait-SUV-no-wait-whatever ZDX has simply not sold well at all for Honda's luxury division. To throw out some basic numbers, since its debut in 2010, Acura has sold a paltry 5,465 ZDX models in two full model years. By comparison, BMW has sold almost four times that number of X6 models in that that same time period.
Why have so few ZDX's been sold? Who's to say for sure. Perhaps the MDX Acura also produces has cannibalized potential ZDX customers. Perhaps the BMW X6 is just that much more appealing. Perhaps the ZDX's base price of $51,815 is just too much for most people to fork over for a car/truck/crossover that appears to be mostly minivan from some angles. Perhaps the ZDX was just one choice too many for consumers to have to consider. Perhaps, all of the above.
One thing is for sure though, the people have spoken and there will be no 2014 ZDX after only three model years, which is no laughing matter. And while we are sure that Carlin's famous seven words still can't be spoken on television, there may also be three letters that shouldn't be mentioned in Acura corporate offices any time soon either.
