Ford Fusion Named 2013 'Green Car Of The Year'

The Ford Fusion was awarded the title of ‘Green Car of the Year’ by Green Car Journal today at the Los Angeles Auto Show. I sense you are surprised. “The Ford Fusion? An American midsize sedan?” That’s right. Considering that previous winners include the Chevy Volt (a plug-in hybrid) and Honda Civic CNG (a natural gas-powered compact car), you’re probably not the only person left scratching their head. So what was it that made Ford’s new midsize sedan stand above other notable contenders (such as the all-electric Nissan LEAF)?

We’ll get to that in a minute. First, let’s look at the four other finalists for the award - these include the Dodge Dart Aero, Mazda CX-5 SkyACTIV, Toyota Prius c, and the Ford C-Max. Still no love for the LEAF. According to Reuters, sales for electric cars like the LEAF and Volt have lagged despite rising gasoline prices. This is likely due to the combination of high costs for electric car production -- specifically the batteries -- and recent advances in technologies making internal combustion engines much more fuel efficient.

Back to the question: Why the Ford Fusion?

"(The Fusion) won by virtue of the fact that it offers an array of choices," said Ron Cogan, editor of Green Car Journal. "This is huge." The Fusion’s wide array of engine selections include the gas-powered base model with its 34 mpg on the highway, the 47 mpg hybrid, and the Energi plug-in with its all-electric range of 20 miles and backup gas-electric hybrid powertrain.

"There's not a whole lot of 'hit 'em right out of the park' vehicles here," said Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports. "There's no new Tesla being introduced. You look at the Green Cars of the Year. There is nothing really earth-shattering."

While advances and improvements in green car technology have slowed in comparison to recent years, nevertheless, the completely redesigned (and mighty handsome, we might add) Ford Fusion rightfully earns its title of ‘Green Car of the Year’ by providing fuel efficient options to a car more people can actually afford.

I just rented one for a trip to New Jersey. It rides great, looks nice and is very comfortable. But, what I really like is the Ford Sync package that ties right in with my smart phone.
