Confirmation Of Porsche's 458 Fighter

We've been hearing tell of a mid-level Porsche supercar since around the time Stuttgart made the 918 Spyder official. The car would slide between the 911 line-up and the 918 Spyder hybrid, going after the turf occupied by cars like the Ferrari 458 Italia and McLaren MP4-12C. A new report confirms the car is indeed in development.

Porsche chief Matthias Muller told Auto Express that Porsche is indeed working on a Ferrari 458 competitor. Muller stopped short of naming the car, but basic Porsche common sense tells us that it should be a three-digit number beginning with 9. Rumor has it, that number is 961.

The car should be a mid-engined sports coupe that Muller imagines pricing in around £250,000 (approximately $400,000 when directly converted). It will borrow some components and design from the 918 Spyder, including the carbon fiber-reinforced-plastic monocoque. It may also borrow power from the 918. While it won't have the electric motors, it may use the 918's V-8 engine tuned to the 570-hp area.

Porsche is currently expanding its line in a variety of directions in order to meet a goal of 200,000 cars per year by 2018. In addition to the 961 and 918 Spyder, Porsche will add other models like the Macan crossover and possibly a smaller version of the Panamera sedan.

No word on when the Porsche 961 might surface
