Bugatti Thinking 1,600-HP, 288-MPH Veyron

The Bugatti Veyron is already the fastest car in the world. It's also one of the most powerful and expensive. There's nary a bragging right left for the ultimate symbol of power and excess, but that isn't stopping Bugatti from developing an even more extreme version.

Automobile magazine reports that Bugatti is working on a 1,600-hp SuperVeyron. That's right - the car actually may be called the "SuperVeyron," not to be confused with the current Veyron Super Sport and its measly 1,200 ponies.

Bugatti may arrive at the extra 400-hp in part by increasing the displacement of the already outlandish 8.0-liter W-16 engine up to 9.7 liters. At the same time, Bugatti plans to address the Veyron's main Achilles' heel: weight. By adding even more carbon fiber, Bugatti hopes to cut weight by around 550 lbs, down around a more earthly 3,500 lbs. It will also improve the car's aerodynamics.

The fruits of all Bugatti's labors should come in the form of a few new world records. The SuperVeyron's top speed is rumored to be in the range of 288 mph - inching ever closer to the 300 mark. Not only will it offer record-smashing top speed, but it should also be the quickest production car in the world by a comfortable margin thanks to a 1.8-second 0-62 mph time.

The ~$2.5 million hypercar to beat all others is expected to make its debut at next year's Frankfurt Motor Show.
