Subaru BRZ To Get Turbo Engine

The Subaru BRZ has already enjoyed all kinds of camera time, headlines and strong sales. Things should only get better for the sports car, as a new turbo engine is rumored to be in the works.

Automotive News reports that Subaru is working on a turbocharged direct injected version of the 2.0-liter horizontally opposed boxer engine used in the BRZ and Toyota GT 86/Scion FR-S. One of the main destinations for that engine will be the BRZ.

The direct injection system will be developed by Subaru and differ from the one in the current BRZ. The new engine could boost the BRZ's output significantly. Auto News suggests up to 280 horses (from 200) and 250 lb-ft of torque (up from 151), promising to make the sports car even more fun to drive.

The new report doesn't mention the turbo version of the engine landing in Toyota's welcoming arms, but past reports have stated that the FR-S will not get a turbo option.

Expect the BRZ turbo to debut by 2014.
