Electric Kia Soul Rumors

Kia will soon offer an electric version of its venerable urban box, the Soul, according to new reports this week. The electric Soul will follow the launch of the next generation gas version within the next two years.

What the electric vehicle market needs is more cars with style and, dare we say, it...soul. The Kia Soul certainly isn't for everyone, but compare it to the Mitsubishi i-Miev or Nissan Leaf, and all of the sudden, it doesn't look so bad.

AutoExpress reports that Kia will offer an electric version of the Soul by 2014. The electric model will follow the new gas version, which will get a few modest styling changes but should be the same boxy hamster wheel we're used to. The gas version is expected to debut around the winter or spring of next year at the Chicago or New York auto show.

AutoExpress' report mentions that the electric Soul will launch in Europe without mentioning any plans for other markets. Edmunds asked Kia Motors America about a US version, but got a rather long-winded equivalent of "no comment." So for now, we don't know if an electric Soul will be rolling out in green-savvy states anytime soon.

We're guessing a combination of higher price, limited mileage and acquired-taste looks will make the electric Soul the very essence of niche.

I own the gas model and love it. Roominess, comfort and great gas mileage, who could ask for more? Well now we can, an electric version.
